Before her name became synonymous with timeless elegance, Carolina Herrera was a style icon in the making—navigating the glamorous social circuits of Caracas and New York with her husband Reinaldo. It was the late 1970s, Studio 54 was pulsing, and Andy Warhol was at the center of it all.
At a dinner party in 1979, Warhol became enamored with Herrera’s gold Van Cleef & Arpels minaudière, playfully trading her the accessory for a portrait. “Take it, it’s yours,” she said. And just like that, a Warhol original was born.
From sixty Polaroids, Warhol selected a single, striking image. A series of four portraits capturing Herrera’s signature Gibson roll, emerald earrings, and poised allure—cementing her place not just in fashion, but in art history.
The portraits remain emblematic of Warhol’s hard-edged aesthetic of the late ‘70s, a style that immortalized the icons of that era.
